The 2010 Polaris Music Prize was presented live online on MuchMusic.com today. Congratulations to Shad for being nominated for the second time and Karkwa as the winner of the prize and $20,000.
Following an amazing performance from Owen Pallet, who was accompanied by a guitarist/bassist, drummer, and horn section, Shad hit the stage as the 7th short-list nominee to perform. Shad rocked it with Rose Garden – bringing on stage Lisa Lobsinger from Reverie Sound Revue to sing the chorus. Next up was “Yaa I Get It.” He continued to lay down his verses while DJ TLO kept switching up the beat. The beats thrown in the rotation included “Grammy Family” by Consequence, “Exhibit C” by Jay Electronica and “Definition” by Black Star. He finished off the short set with an a capella freestyle that had everyone sitting on the edge of their seats and hanging on to every single word. Tegan and Sara soon followed him up with an acoustic set – a different path from their usual electronic sound.
You can watch it replayed on MuchMusic September 25th at 9ET/6PT.
